The Karangahake Gorge has so many things to see and do with or without the kids.
When we get asked "What is there to do in the area?" we find ourselves smiling. The main reason for this smile is because this area has so much to offer that people are often surprised. The other is the fact that the gorge has managed to stay somewhat of a hidden treasure to most of NZ, so when it is discovered it is never forgotten.
The main attraction is the HAURAKI RAIL TRAIL. This cycle pathway runs from Paeroa to Waihi and conveniently runs along the bottom of our doorstep, which means you can cycle either way.
The route to Paeroa takes in the dramatic scenery of the gorge with it's waterfalls and rapids, the local winery and of course the tunnels and bridges.
The route to Waihi is more of a rural cycle ride taking in the countryside. It is very picturesque and peaceful. You can even cycle to Waihi and then get the train back!
Both routes take about an hour one way so plenty of time to take in the scenery and delicious food we have on offer. To find out more watch this Hauraki Rail Trail Video or for more details CLICK HERE
There are lots of other activities to get involved in if cycling is not your thing. Here are a few suggestions:
Waihi Beach is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the white sand, the sea breeze and the sunshine. With a long beach and a great range of cafes and restaurants you can easily while a way a few hours.
Just a short drive from the gorge is the town of Paeroa, famous for it's L&P drink but also for its quaint vintage and retro shops. It's easy to while away a few hours just strolling around these shops full of memories and antiques.
